It is wonderful to see so many plots taking shape as members have been taking advantage of the fine weather. We are very lucky that the Covid 19 guidelines still consider working on your allotment to count as daily exercise provided the social distancing measures are followed. It is good to see that members are are following these so that we all feel safe whilst there. Thank you.
The committee will shortly be doing their April plot check and contacting those members who have not started yet. If you are unable to work on your plot, whether due to the current pandemic or any other reason, please do contact the committee and let us know so we can see what we can do to help you. There are a number of options we can offer.
Following the directives from the Government on Monday 23rd March, we have contacted the local authority and they have sent us the information below regarding the opening and management of Allotments during this period of ‘lockdown’.
It is ok for members to attend to their plots but they must observe the social interaction rules that have been set down by the Government, ie no groups of more than two people and keep a safe (2 metres) distant between you and anybody you meet or pass on the site. The specific rules for plot holders is no more than two people per plot and do NOT take or arrange to meet any friends/family on site or on your plot. We would also remind you about sanitisation and being diligent with cleanliness when arriving or leaving the site. We will be closing the toilets and removing the forks that are available for loading compost. The wheelbarrows will still be there for members to use, but you should be aware of the risks and you should wipe the handles before and after use and wear gloves where possible. If you feel at all unwell, please do not enter the site at all, even if you think you will be the only person there. Observe the rule ‘Stay at home – protect the NHS – Save Lives’
The National Allotment Society which celebrates its 90th Anniversary this year, has recently issued an article with an appeal for help with any photographs that members may have. This is to assist with their publicity during the year. Although the HAS is not yet that old, this maybe of interest to some of our members or their families who could assist with the information ? Dawn, our Treasurer will be sending out invoices for next season’s plot fees at the end of October/beginning of November. This is often a time when members reflect on whether they wish to continue for another year or not. Most of you carry on, though there is always someone who is finding difficulties and is moving on, if this is you, the sooner we know the easier it is to manage the handover to a new member.
Currently, the plots are all taken and we do have people on the waiting list. So if you are thinking of giving up your plot, please do talk to Dawn as soon as possible, she can be contacted by email at:

This coming weekend (13/14 July) there will be a Working Party at our allotments, where we will aim to get our site looking the very best for the following weekends Annual Open Day. (21st July) There will be plenty of jobs this Saturday & Sunday so everyone can help out regardless of age or ability. As usual we start at 10am, refreshments are of course available, so please do come along on either or both days and lend a hand. Information on the Annual Open Day can be found following :-
You may have noticed that there is a change with our web site. Importantly we now have a new location address as www.hawkinge-allotments.org.uk (A dash is now placed between hawkinge and allotments). Additionally, all previous society email addresses have been changed (e.g firstname.lastname@example.org). Amongst other benefits, this site has additional security, so please do have a browse around, hopefully you’ll find something new and of interest.
The minutes for the 2015 AGM are also there for reference, it is proposed that these will not be read out in full in Sunday’s meeting and approval for their accuracy will be confirmed based on members ability to read them via the website.
We have two shed’s currently erected on-site that are no longer required by our previous members. Both appear to be in a good or very good condition. If you have one that has seen better days or you require a shed for your plot, please let us know and further details can be supplied.
